The Issue

September 8, 2023 the Hays daily News covered a story about mold in the dorms. The article said the university had received work requests from students to address what they believed might indicate mold-related issues in the ventilation system. Students felt their concerns had been swept under the rug.

FHSU did a mold evaluation, but DID not check the ventilation systems. The 66 page mold evaluation report that has NOT been released to students states: Aspergillus and Penicillium are both of concern for some of their species’ ability to produce mycotoxins and their ability to cause allergic responses in some people. Cladosporium is of concern as an allergen.

The WHO states Mycotoxins can cause a variety of adverse health effects and pose a serious health threat to both humans and livestock. The adverse health effects of mycotoxins range from acute poisoning to long-term effects such as immune deficiency and cancer.

Students are still sick and symptoms are relieved when they go home on break.

We demand that FHSU management arrange for an immediate inspection of the air systems within McMindes Hall and Victor E Village to ensure mold is not circulating in the ventilation systems. We also request more extensive testing on the identified molds capable of producing mycotoxins to determine if they are among the most toxic types.

Health is at stake here - it's time for FHSU management to step up and ensure a safe living environment for the students.

Please sign this petition urging them towards immediate action!
