I am reaching out with a heavy heart and a firm determination to fight for justice. Recently, my husband - my daughter’s father and the father of another child here -  a brave asylum seeker, obtained legal documentation from a federal immigration judge allowing him to reside in the United States indefinitely on deferred status. In his quest to fulfill all legal requirements, he was attending a biometrics appointment to ensure his status was in complete alignment with the law when agents from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) unexpectedly detained him. This incident has not only disrupted our family, but has also highlighted a profound injustice that affects many.



Unfortunately, his story is not an isolated one. Numerous individuals with genuine and lawful documentation find themselves unjustly detained by ICE while in the midst of complying with legal procedures. According to a study conducted by the American Immigration Council, a significant number of immigrants are wrongly detained, with many held in facilities despite possessing legal rights to stay in the country. This misuse of power by ICE represents a grave injustice and a clear deviation from the ideals of fairness and equality.

 The detention of documented immigrants is a direct violation of their human rights and sows fear among communities striving to comply with the law. I don’t agree with the former administration who let droves of people in from foreign lands unvetted, however I far from agree with the current administration’s way of handling that issue. Either extreme is no good! These are humans beings with families who are here trying to make things right, despite their past indiscretions. Every individual who has bravely taken steps and done their due diligence to comply with immigration law deserves respect and the fair treatment promised by American values.



It’s time to demand change. We urge the president to establish stricter oversight on ICE operations and to implement clear guidelines that prevent the detention and fast track deportation of individuals with any type of legal documentation signed off on by a federal judge stating they can remain in the United Stated either permanently or indefinitely. That oversight will ensure that those following legal procedures are protected from wrongful detainment and not be tricked into a catch-22 situation where they are given appointments to try to uphold their status only to be ambushed and arrested, sometimes in front of their own children. We must stand united to ensure that justice prevails and that the freedoms and rights of individuals like my husband, who is a father first and foremost, are upheld with integrity. This call for change and justice is not only for our family but for countless others enduring similar situations.
