We, the residents of Lumberton, NC, have recently been burdened with unreasonably high utility bills. This unfair increase is traced back to incorrect readings by a previous city employee, who worked on the meter-reading duties. It effectually doubled, and in some cases even tripled the utility costs for several households without any corresponding substantial increase in usage, putting a significant strain on our financial stability.

Misleading readings undermine our trust in the city utility services and create an unjust financial burden on hardworking community members who are responsible utility users. All citizens have a rightful expectation for transparent and accurate billing for their consumption, which at this point is being seriously violated.

In light of this situation, we are calling upon the City of Lumberton to conduct a thorough review of this matter. We urge the city to rectify this situation by adjusting the over-priced utility bills and ensuring this kind of oversight does not happen in the future. Rather than pushing it off by.splitting payments, we ask the city to waive the overage costs associated with incorrect readings. Split payments still cause undue financial hardship to residents who have not irresponsibly misused utilities.
