Demand Fair Treatment for Employees with Mental Health Issues and illnesses
The Issue
I am one among millions who struggle with depression. Every day, countless individuals like me face the added burden of discrimination and misunderstanding in workplaces across the United States. The prevailing attitude that employees should "leave their issues at the door" is not only outdated but harmful, particularly for those grappling with mental health conditions.
In many workplaces, favoritism is rampant and acceptance of individual differences is scarce. This exacerbates mental health issues and creates a toxic environment where employees are forced into roles they are uncomfortable with or ill-suited to due to their condition. It's time we recognize this as an issue of basic human rights.
According to a report by Mental Health America, over 44 million American adults have a mental health condition yet more than half receive no treatment (Mental Health America, 2018). Many cite fear of discrimination and bias as reasons for not seeking help - fears that are all too often validated in our workplaces.
We need legislation that protects employees from being forced into situations that can worsen their mental health conditions under the guise of productivity or efficiency. After three instances where an employee has been placed in such a situation against their will, it should be considered illegal.
This petition calls on lawmakers to enact stronger protections for workers dealing with mental illness and demands employers foster environments where everyone can thrive regardless of their personal struggles. We must end workplace psychological torment now! Please sign this petition if you believe in fair treatment for all employees irrespective of their mental health status.
I believe we can make a change to the whole world mental illness will be better
