I'm a born and raised Morningside Heights resident who is currently fighting to stay in my home! I was baptized at the Church of Notre Dame, schooled at Corpus Christi, studied piano at Bloomingdale School of Music, learned how to dance at Ballet Hispanico, and continue to give back to my community as a local non-profit worker, Harlem Run volunteer, West Side Tenants for Change steering committee member, and as part of the NYC POC Healing Circle community of care. My roots here run deep, as a third-generation resident, my home is not just the place where I live; it is part of my family's history.
I'm currently facing an eviction attempt and what I believe to be an unjust suppression of my rent-stabilized tenant succession rights by the 605-611 West 111th Street Realty Corporation after the death of my grandma in May of 2024.
As a rent stabilized renter, I have a rightful tenant succession claim that I hope will be recognized as I returned back home in 2020 to live with my grandmother as her primary caregiver.
My home should not be treated as a commodity. It is the place where I've had a bedroom my entire life, where my grandparents helped raise me, where many of the old timers have seen me grow up over decades, where I experienced the death of my last living grandparent, and where lifetimes of memories live.
After I informed my landlord, 605-611 West 111th Street Realty Corporation, of my tenant succession claim and provided the necessary documentation, I have encountered difficulties including blocked access to my ClickPay online payment portal I've used over the last four years to pay rent, the return of rent checks I had mailed in, being served a Notice to Quit, and then a Holdover Notice in what feels like an effort to obstruct my rightful tenant succession claim. This has led to me feeling mentally and spiritually depleted while also straining me financially as I continue to navigate legal fees paired with housing insecurity.
My ask is simple: I demand acknowledgment and respect for my rights as a rent-stabilized tenant, and my lease finally granted to me, so I can grieve the immense loss of my grandma in peace at home where I belong. In an era where housing security is becoming increasingly unstable in Morningside Heights & Harlem, succession rights play a vital role in protecting tenants like me.
