The Issue

Our struggle began when we were overcharged to move into our apartment in Hemet, CA. We had hoped despite the steep moving costs, that the apartment facilities and amenities would make it worth our while. Sadly, we were mistaken. Our community pool was taken away and our persisting appliance issues were addressed in the barest minimum way possible. This included the air conditioner, dishwasher, sinks and garbage disposal, the gate being broken and our tenants and guest are unable to enter or leave the property at times or the gate being open for days at a time. The trash left near the trash can and the discriminating threats made by the landlords to charge us for removal of appliances without reasonable timing. This indifference extended when we seen the high turnover with tenants in the apartment, tenants being denied their security deposits, tenants not able to extend their lease, and the safety of the apartment in general.

According to California law, a landlord must return a tenant's security deposit, with an itemized statement of deductions, within 21 days of the tenant's departure. Contrary to this, we fear that we may be denied our rightful return because of the complaints we submitted but have also been expected to shoulder the expense of their indifference towards maintenance issues. This matter is personal to us as we know there are many others in Hemet facing similar predicaments.

Statistics show that around 26.4% of Hemet's population live under the poverty line, which is significantly higher than the national average of 13.1% (United States Census Bureau). Excessive rent and security deposit costs are a burden for this already challenging economic landscape. We, tenants of Hemet, implore our landlords and property managers to abide by the regulations put in place for tenant's protection. It's time we held them accountable for fair practices.

It is essential we stand together to assure our rights are not being infringed upon. Sign this petition to demand the fair return of our security deposits or lower rent.
