The Issue

In October 2020, I suffered a debilitating stroke. This life-changing event led to the discovery of severe heart issues requiring critical surgery in October 2023. My family and friends faced not only the emotional toll of supporting me but also encountered a significant financial burden due to parking fees at the hospitals and medical facilities in Erie, PA. During crucial times, they had to park in facilities controlled by the Erie County Parking Authority, which refused to validate parking for patients or offer parking breaks for medical staff like nurses. This issue affects not only me but countless others who rely on these hospitals.

Erie is home to three major hospitals, yet only two of these, along with their associated medical offices and clinics, have parking facilities managed by the Erie County Parking Authority. Unfortunately, the current policies do not provide any parking validation for patients or discounted rates for medical professionals. This oversight places an unnecessary financial burden on those seeking care and for those who provide it.

For the many families and individuals already navigating the stress and hardship of medical treatment, the added cost of parking, averaging between $5 and $15 per day, can quickly add up, especially for long-term treatments. This is compounded for the dedicated nurses and staff who dedicate their lives to caring for the community and yet receive no reprieve from these costs themselves.

We propose a solution that is both fair and feasible: Implement a parking validation system for patients and their families visiting these medical facilities. Additionally, offer discounted parking passes or reduced rates for healthcare workers serving in these crucial roles. Such measures would alleviate an undue financial strain and reflect the community's support for those in need and those who serve them.

By signing this petition, you can support a change that will ease the burden on patients and their families, and show appreciation for our medical heroes in Erie. Let's urge the Erie County Parking Authority to reassess and revise their parking policies to accommodate the needs of patients and healthcare workers alike. Please sign this petition to call for fair parking practices in Erie’s medical facilities and help us create a supportive environment for all those who are touched by these hospitals.
