The Issue
In Botswana, the dedication and hard work of boarding staff in public schools have gone unrecognized for too long. These individuals perform crucial, continuous duties such as night supervision, weekend oversight, and holiday care, all of which are fundamental to the smooth operation of school boarding facilities. Without their unwavering commitment, the safety and well-being of students in these environments would be compromised. Yet, despite their critical role, boarding staff are not receiving the overtime allowances they rightfully deserve.
Currently, teachers who take on boarding duties in an auxiliary capacity receive overtime compensation, while the boarding staff, whose primary responsibilities include these essential tasks, do not. This practice not only undervalues the pivotal role that boarding staff play but also creates a significant imbalance in the treatment and recognition of school personnel.
The Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education must address this issue promptly. Recognizing and compensating boarding staff for their overtime work is not just a matter of fairness but a necessity to ensure the retention of motivated and dedicated staff members who are fundamental to the quality of education and care students receive.
We propose that the Ministry establish a fair and transparent policy that ensures all boarding staff are compensated for their overtime duties. This policy should be backed by rigorous enforcement and regular audits to maintain accountability and fairness across all public schools.
Join us in urging the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education to acknowledge the essential services that boarding staff provide and to treat these dedicated professionals with the fairness and respect they deserve. By signing this petition, you are standing up for equity and justice within our educational institutions. Sign now and make a difference!
