I, along with many other young women at Catawba Ridge High School, have  faced an unfair and distressing situation. While attending school and wearing what I considered an appropriate long shirt, I made sure my bra was well concealed beneath it, with my hair further covering any potentially visible straps. To my surprise, in the middle of an important quiz, I was called down to the office, only to be dress coded for my so-called "spaghetti straps." This enforcement was not only unnecessarily disruptive but was followed by a statement that this infraction would be noted in order to "keep our school safe." How does my clothing pose a threat to our school's safety?

This experience is not unique to me. There are countless young women at our school facing similar scrutiny, often for wearing clothes that are in no way inappropriate or revealing. Our school's dress code policies are being selectively enforced, and it seems that they target specific students for arbitrary reasons. Many students show considerably more skin without repercussions, revealing an unjust bias in these dress code policies.

This practice of singling out specific attire creates an environment that is not conducive to learning and only serves to marginalize and distract young women from their education. It implies that the onus is on female students to prevent others from being "distracted," which is an outdated and harmful notion. Instead, the focus should be on fostering a supportive educational atmosphere where clothing judgments do not obstruct our learning.

We call on the administration of Catawba Ridge High School to reevaluate the implementation of the dress code. This includes reviewing dress code policies with input from students, parents, and faculty to ensure they are fair, non-discriminatory, and gender-neutral. Transparent guidelines that outline what is considered appropriate, along with consistent enforcement for all students, will help create a fairer environment.

We deserve a high school experience free from unnecessary judgment and one where we can excel based on our abilities and hard work, not our attire. Let's stand together to ensure equity and justice in our school's dress code enforcement.
