The Issue

With the surge of cybercrimes, the security of personal information and online accounts is under constant threat. Facebook, being one of the largest social media platforms with more than 2.89 billion monthly active users as of the second quarter of 2021, has a remarkable responsibility to safeguard its users' data (1). Unfortunately, several users fall victim to account hacking, scams, and theft.

Instagram, also a leading social media platform - and ironically, owned by Facebook - has implemented an efficient feature to recover stolen or hacked accounts. It uses selfie verification videos. The feature requires users under account recovery processes to record a selfie video, verifying their identity (2). This tool has proven effective against unauthorized account access.

Given the success and security enhancement it affords, we ask Facebook to incorporate similar features. Allowing users to recover their stolen, scammed, or hacked accounts through selfie verification videos would drastically increase user security.

We insist that Facebook respects and protects the rights of its users by implementing increased security measures. We ask signatories to back this petition, urging Facebook to establish selfie video authentication for account recovery immediately. Sign and share to make Facebook a safer place for each one of us.
