The Issue

Templeton Library is operated by dedicated volunteers and funded entirely through local donations. It receives no operational funding from San Luis Obispo County, even though Templeton residents continue to pay the 1.6% County library services  tax.

San Luis Obispo County closed the Templeton Library in 1979.  After years of working with SLO County, in 2023, Templeton residents did what many thought impossible—they built and opened a new public library through local fundraising, volunteer labor, donations, and community determination.

For the children of Templeton who cannot walk or bike to Atascadero Library 7 miles away, a library isn't just about books; it's about community, self-discovery, and growth. Templeton Library is walkable, built across from our schools, and provides a safe environment for students to learn and explore outside of school hours. It fosters a spirit of curiosity and love for reading, crucial for academic success and personal development.

Funding disparities have left Templeton underserved with limited access to essential library services. By reallocating the existing tax funds and encouraging partnerships with educational and cultural institutions, we can change this inequity.

We respectfully request San Luis Obispo County to allocate an equitable share of the library tax revenue generated by Templeton residents to support the Templeton Library.  Local tax dollars should help sustain the library that is serving our community.

Your signature on this petition will help demonstrate to local authorities your support to demand a fair investment in our community's future.

Please sign this petition to equitably fund Templeton Library to provide our children with the resources they deserve.
