Demand Equal Protection for Cats Under the Law
The Issue
Our family cat, who was only two years old, was tragically killed by a vehicle on 7/11/23. He was left in the road with severe injuries until some kind-hearted individuals noticed him and contacted us using his tag. This devastating event has not only broken our hearts but also made us painfully aware of a glaring issue - cats do not have the same legal protections as dogs.
Cats are working animals too; they've been used to control vermin populations for centuries. Yet, when they are injured or killed on our roads, their deaths often go unreported and unnoticed. They deserve better.
In many jurisdictions, it is mandatory to report incidents involving dogs; failure to do so can result in penalties (source: Animal Welfare Act). We believe that this protection should be extended to cats as well. It's time we recognize their value and contribution to our communities by ensuring they receive equal protection under the law.
We urge lawmakers to amend existing animal welfare laws or enact new ones that will require reporting any incidents involving cats on our roads - just like it is required for dogs.
This isn't just about justice for our beloved pet who was taken from us too soon; it's about justice for all cats who serve an important role in our lives and communities.
Please sign this petition if you believe that all animals deserve equal protection under the law. Let's make sure no more families have to suffer like ours did because of outdated laws that fail to protect all pets equally.
