I am a mother, a woman, who has experienced firsthand the devastating effects of discrimination and negligence in our healthcare system. My daughter now lives with a permanent disability due to the stigma attached to my past history of substance use. The team at Maxxine Wright Community Health Center Midwife Wraparound Program assumed that my child would be low birth weight and premature. This assumption led to an ill-prepared delivery where my daughter was stuck during birth, born not breathing due to her size - her shoulders were too wide for my body.

This is not just about me or my family; it's about all women, children, and people with disabilities who face violence, discrimination, and destruction of families every day in Surrey BC Canada. We are up against an army of government workers whose actions have frozen any progress towards justice.

The stress from these experiences is overwhelming; it halts our efforts and hard work towards bettering our lives. We must remember that our mistakes do not define us but rather serve as stepping stones towards growth.

Statistics show that 1 in 5 Canadians experience some form of disability (source: Canadian Survey on Disability). It's high time we stop this rampant discrimination against them. Furthermore, according to Statistics Canada data from 2018, nearly 30% of women aged 15 years or older reported experiencing at least one incident of physical or sexual assault since the age of 15.

We cannot sit idly by while such injustices continue unchecked within our society. Let's stand together against this systemic issue plaguing Fraser Valley Healthcare system which has far-reaching consequences on innocent lives like that of my daughter.
