A mother to a 10-month-old baby with special needs, was promised housing by Atira Women's Resource Society and the Maxxine Wright Center. Trusting their word, she packed up her life in Surrey BC, accompanied by police officers who put them in an Uber bound for Vancouver. Upon arrival, they found out it was all lies. Now they are stranded in Vancouver with no shelter or food - an unthinkable situation for any mother and child to endure.
This is not just about one woman and her child; this is about the countless vulnerable women and children who are victims of violence every day. In Canada alone, on average every six days a woman is killed by her intimate partner (Canadian Women’s Foundation). This statistic becomes even more alarming when we consider that many cases go unreported due to fear or lack of resources.
Atira Women's Resource Society and the Maxxine Wright Center claim to be organizations dedicated to ending violence against women but their actions have shown otherwise. They must be held accountable for their false promises which have resulted in further harm towards vulnerable women and children.
We demand transparency from these organizations regarding their procedures for providing assistance to those seeking refuge from violence. We also insist on immediate action being taken to ensure that no other woman or child finds themselves abandoned as our friend did.
Stand with us as we fight against this injustice. Sign this petition today demanding accountability from Atira Women's Resource Society and the Maxxine Wright Center.
