Demand Due Process for Workers Detained in Danville ICE Raids
The Issue
Last week, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained nearly 49 construction workers building a new patient tower at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. Advocates say it's the largest workplace immigration raid in the state's history. The men, who came from Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, and other countries, were swept up as they left the job site, some stopped in their cars, others followed home by local police. All of them are still in detention.
Danville police helped carry out these arrests, and drone surveillance reportedly hovered over the operation, turning a construction site into something closer to a militarized zone. Checkpoints went up on highways leaving town, catching workers who had nothing to do with the raid at all.
These are people who build our hospitals, our roads, and our homes. Detaining them without a clear path to legal counsel or a fair hearing tears families apart and destabilizes the very community Geisinger's new tower is meant to serve.
"We don't need our local police enforcing federal law. It is not their job and has proven time and again to harm public safety," said Jasmine Rivera, executive director of the Pennsylvania Immigration Coalition.
We're calling on the Danville Police Department to end its cooperation with ICE enforcement operations, and on ICE to guarantee every detained worker full access to legal representation and a fair process before any removal decision is made.
Sign the petition to demand due process for the Danville workers and an end to local police involvement in ICE raids — before more families are torn apart.
