This petition begins with a disturbing event. A dedicated employee suffered heat exhaustion at her workplace to the point of vomiting; she was merely sent home and dismissed from her job. This did not take place in some underground sweatshop, but in our own local Dollar General store in Cross Plains, Texas.

The worker was told if she couldn't work in the conditions she couldn't shop in them. Let's be clear, enduring the heat for an 8-hour shift is vastly different than tolerating it for a brief 20-minute shopping spree. Is this the kind of community establishment we want to endorse?

The store's air conditioning has been malfunctioning for years, regularly causing the store to close early when temperatures hit 85 degrees or above. Could you imagine working in these conditions? The answer should be 'no'. This is not only an inconvenience for customers but a clear violation of workers' rights.

Further compounding the issue, the products on the shelves are physically melting due to the heat. It is not only an employment issue but a public safety concern. It's not inconceivable to ask if food products are safe for consumption while kept in such high temperatures.

The management at the time of these events was led by a person named 'Barbara'. Her leadership approach, by many accounts, can be described as tyrannical. It's critical we demand better for the people of our town. No one should be subject to such inhumane working conditions, and no customer should have to compromise their shopping experience due to unaddressed mechanical failures.

When it comes to workers' rights, Dollar General Corp must be held accountable. They must address this fault in their Cross Plains store by repairing the cooling system and implementing an ethical management system. It's about time we stand up for our central Texas community and demand the fair treatment of employees and patrons alike.
