Demand constitutional reform in Barbados
The Issue
For too long, I have witnessed the harsh realities faced by citizens of Barbados under a system that operates without a legal constitution since October 11, 2021. As someone who has personally suffered under this regime, I feel compelled to speak out against the injustices rampant within our nation. The lack of a formal constitution has given way to a lawless environment where the rights of citizens are continually trampled upon. In the absence of a proper legal framework, the actions of the government and legal institutions remain unchecked, fostering a culture of fear and oppression.
This void of legal constitutionality has allowed the police to act with impunity. There have been numerous reports and firsthand accounts of police misconduct, including killings and threats against civilians occurring in broad daylight. These heinous acts have shaken our communities to the core, compromising our sense of security and trust in those sworn to protect us.
Furthermore, the government of Barbados has repeatedly failed to address the urgent concerns of its people. Without a constitution to outline the fundamental rights of citizens, accountability in governance is virtually non-existent, leaving the public vulnerable and unheard.
It is imperative that we as citizens demand immediate action to restore a functioning constitution in Barbados. This is not only essential to reinstating the rule of law but also to ensuring that justice and democracy prevail in our beloved nation.
