The Issue

America's national parks belong to all of us. But the roads, trails, water systems, historic buildings, campgrounds, and visitor facilities that make these places safe and accessible face an enormous repair backlog.

At the end of fiscal year 2025, the National Park Service estimated $24.237 billion in deferred maintenance and repair needs across the National Park System. These are needed repairs to roads, buildings, utility systems, and other park infrastructure—not simply cosmetic improvements.

Congress has already shown that it can address this problem.

In 2020, the bipartisan Great American Outdoors Act created the National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund. The fund was authorized for fiscal years 2021 through 2025, with up to $1.9 billion annually across eligible federal land-management agencies. Of that, the National Park Service could receive up to $1.3 billion per year for overdue repairs.

Those investments are making a real difference. National Park Service projects supported by the fund received more than $5.7 billion in infrastructure investment, supporting work on aging roads, trails, buildings, campgrounds, utilities, and water-treatment systems.

But the fund's original authorization ended after fiscal year 2025. Projects that were already funded can continue, but the program received its last deposit under the original authorization in FY2025. Meanwhile, billions of dollars in needed repairs remain.

There is a concrete solution already before Congress.

The bipartisan America the Beautiful Act (S. 1547) was introduced to reauthorize the National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund. Its original Senate sponsors include lawmakers from both parties, demonstrating that maintaining America's public lands does not have to be a partisan issue.

We are calling on Congress to reauthorize and strengthen the National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund and provide the National Park Service with reliable resources to repair and maintain the places Americans have entrusted it to protect.

Our national parks should not be allowed to deteriorate simply because necessary repairs are continually postponed. These places preserve extraordinary landscapes, history, wildlife, and opportunities for millions of people to experience the outdoors.

The repair program already exists. The need is documented. Congress has a path to continue it. The time to act is now. Tomorrow is not guaranteed for any of us. The same is true for our National Parks.

Through our combined action today, we can help to preserve and protect some of the most beautiful and important places on this planet. If you have ever visited a National Park or found beauty in this natural world, this petition is for you.

Sign this petition and demand that Congress renew dedicated funding to repair and protect America's national parks for the generations that come after us.
