The Issue

Every time I look at the map of federal Superfund sites across New Jersey, I can't help but feel a rising frustration. These aren't just random spots on a map; these are neighborhoods we call home, now riddled with toxic remnants from industrial misuse. Places like Gloucester Township or Somerset, playing host to beloved baseball fields, were once grounds for hazardous waste. Just recently, we uncovered issues in Keyport, where a street is witnessing a cancer cluster rising to 41 cases and counting.

It's infuriating to see these neglected sites, supposedly made 'safe' just because a few plants sprung up. The land in Keyport leaked contaminants into the groundwater and bay, a fact that puts our environment and health at even greater risk. Meanwhile, complex contaminations like the Raritan Slag Superfund site resulted from industrial giants such as DuPont — issues from closed landfills and hazardous dumps left unresolved for decades.

The alarming reality is that these sites are not just environmental blemishes; they are dangerous legacies that directly impact our communities' health and wellbeing. As New Jersey residents, we cannot keep turning a blind eye, hoping the problem will magically solve itself as it festers beneath the surface. It’s past time for serious and immediate cleanup efforts to protect all of us from further harm.

We need genuine advocacy and action, not just empty promises. Representatives like Frank Pallone must relentlessly push for federal intervention and resources to remediate these areas properly and permanently. It's a pressing issue that needs robust solutions now, not further delays.

We refuse to continue watching our communities suffer from preventable hazards. We must demand immediate federal action to clean up New Jersey's Superfund sites and secure a healthier, safer future for generations to come. Sign this petition today to make our voice louder and bring about change.
