Demand Change for Corrupt UT Austin's Parking Services

Demand Change for Corrupt UT Austin's Parking Services
The Issue
The University of Texas at Austin's Parking Services (PTS) has been abusing and exploiting the university community, including students, staff, family, guests, and alumni, through excessive fines, exorbitant prices, unjust citations, and strict policies. Its criminal actions are more akin to profiteering than running a university service. It is vital that a system of checks and balances is put in place between departments to prevent any such issues in the future. They run rampant, frequently breaking their own rules in distributing citations, and have no-one to answer to for justice. These predatory practices jeopardize the integrity of the university, and makes campus inaccessible to community members, while unnecessarily adding to their financial stress. Alarmingly, PTS reportedly generates millions in profits annually. In the academic year 2020/2021 revenue was $14,249,688.00. The number of citations for the same year was 22,792. These publicly-available numbers (Annual Reports | Parking & Transportation (utexas.edu) ) demonstrate the magnitude of this exploitation. We urge University of Texas at Austin's President Jay Hartzell to intervene, changing this system that is creating undue burdens on our Longhorn family. We appeal to our leaders to intervene and mandate a comprehensive reform of this department. The current situation is unsustainable and demands immediate attention. The university needs a fair and equitable parking system that does not exclusively profit off its community, but instead, functions to support and facilitate it. We call on all Longhorns to express our needs. Together we can bring about necessary change. Please sign this petition to stand against this corruption and to advocate for a more responsible, equitable parking system at UT Austin.
