Demand Change Against Hair Discrimination!
The Issue
Our Future WV is asking for your help to fight against hair discrimination! For too long people of color have been discriminated against based on certain hair textures and hairstyles in both our education system and the workplace. These hairstyles and textures include, but not limited to, braids, locks, and twists.
Whether in schools, the workplace or anywhere else, these acts of discrimination will not be tolerated. Too often, the black community has been forced to change their appearance in the workplace to "look more professional" and appease white leadership, and been denied their natural hairstyle and texture.
Students have been discriminated against because of their hairstyle, forced out of sports and the classroom. One instance, a black student was barred from playing high school basketball games because of his dreadlocks, with his coach saying he had to cut his hair because they weren't "neat."
We are asking the people of West Virginia and its businesses to stand up and fight for a more just and equitable community. We ask you to join us in this fight and pledge that you and your workplace will not tolerate discrimination based on hairstyle and hair texture.
