Demand CenterPoint Energy Bury Power Lines in Houston

The Issue

Houston, let's come together. Millions of us have lost power, multiple times, for days on end due to weather conditions. It disrupts our lives, our work, our schools, is dangerous for our families and more. We feel helpless and overlooked.

The primary cause of these power outages? Above-ground power lines that are susceptible to weather conditions. The solution seems clear, yet nothing has been done: we need to bury the power lines.

Centerpoint Energy was on record stating it would cost $2.5M per mile to bury the lines and would be too expensive. According to MacroTrends, Centerpoint Energy's Gross Profit in 2023 was $6.56 Billion. For perspective, the loop of inner Houston is 42 miles. Their profits last year would cover 2,760 miles.

While their profits alone couldn't bury the lines of all their Houston customers, they must prioritize burying lines near our hospitals and densely populated areas.

We need an immediate, a 5 year and a 10 year plan from our government and only power provider to solve this issue.

Their business and profitability decisions to not invest in stable infrastructure for our power supply in Houston has led to disaster. Why does their stock go up when millions of us are without power?

Burying power lines is a practice that has shown to significantly reduce power disruptions. According to the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), underground power lines are less prone to damage from wind, falling trees or ice accumulation. As a result, areas with underground power lines experience fewer weather-associated blackouts.

We call on CenterPoint Energy, as a critical provider of electricity in our city, to partner with city and state governments and invest in burying the power lines in Houston. This essential initiative will provide greater stability and reliability to our power supply, benefitting all Houstonians.

Ensure Houstonians stop suffering through prolonged, unnecessary power outages. Sign this petition to demand CenterPoint Energy and government officials make burying power lines in Houston a priority.

Please share and comment your stories of how our unstable power infrastructure has impacted you.
