Demand Canada to Satisfy the Right to Clean Water and Compensate First Nations Communities

Demand Canada to Satisfy the Right to Clean Water and Compensate First Nations Communities
The Issue
As someone who considers the access to water a basic human right, I am deeply unsettled by the unfulfilled promises of the Canadian government. Our nation, holding 20% of the world's freshwater, can't even guarantee clean water to its own communities - an outrage that cannot be overlooked.
Currently, 28 First Nations communities suffer due to ongoing drinking water advisories (DWAs). According to their own website, despite the federal government's promise in 2015 to eliminate all of DWAs by 2021, as of June 2024, dozens of Indigenous populations are under long-term drinking water advisories, some of which have been in place for over two decades. It's a matter of human rights.
Just look at Calgary, for example. Their main water pipe broke on June 5th, and officials say that it will be fixed before July 5th. Meanwhile, an Indigenous community in Northern Ontario had to evacuate, be denied clean drinking water, dig a temporary solution themselves, and wait more than three months for a final solution. All citizens deserve clean drinking water, and there is no difference between the people of a large city and a First Nations community - they both have the right to access usable water.
This petition calls on the government to prioritize this crisis. It demands immediate action towards fulfilling their commitment to eliminate water advisories and ensure safe drinking water for all First Nations communities. Additionally, the affected communities should be fully compensated for their prolonged suffering and hardships.
Imagine living in a country with an abundant supply of clean, fresh water but you cannot access it. Several times, the solution to this problem has been delayed and it is time to take action. Canada, if we are truly proud and free, why don't we change this?
This is not just a promise; it's an obligation to the nation and to the sustainability of our future. It requires our collective action and non-negotiable commitment to make a substantial change.
We demand transparency, accountability, and immediate action. Canada must fulfill its promise to its First Nations communities. Sign this petition if you stand for the rights to clean drinking water for every citizen.
