The Issue

For over two decades, I have been a loyal user of Tivo units, relying on them to record and enjoy cable TV content on my own terms. However, the ability of these devices to function is now being threatened due to the lack of support from major cable TV providers like Comcast, Cox, and Verizon. Without the necessary cable cards, these devices, which have served me well and have been superior to provider-supplied equipment, are rendered useless. This shift not only disregards consumer choice but also contributes to unnecessary environmental waste.

Cable providers are phasing out the support for personal DVR equipment, which leaves countless Tivo users frustrated and forced to switch to less desired and often less efficient options. Such actions not only limit consumer freedom but also stifle innovation and technological diversity in the home entertainment industry. Tivo units and similar personal DVRs have long been a symbol of technological advancement, offering users superior recording capabilities, personalized content management, and user-friendly interfaces.

Moreover, discontinuing support for Tivo units and similar devices undermines environmental sustainability efforts. These devices, which are perfectly functional, being forced into obsolescence leads to increased electronic waste. Encouraging waste reduction and supporting recyclable technology should be a priority.

A practical and equitable solution is simple — provide consumers with the option to purchase a compatible cable card if service providers choose not to supply them. This approach respects consumer rights, fosters technological variety, and is environmentally responsible. Allow those who wish to use their personal DVR setups to do so without unnecessary hindrances.

We call upon Comcast, Cox, Verizon, and other cable providers to reconsider their current policies to allow consumers like myself who cherish their personal DVR equipment, an opportunity for continued use. By offering a pathway to purchase compatible cable cards, providers will be fostering competition, consumer satisfaction, and an eco-friendly technosphere.

Please join me in urging these companies to support consumer choice and environmental sustainability by signing this petition. Demand that major cable TV providers reinstate support for personal DVR devices and offer an option for consumers to buy their own cable cards. Together, we can protect our freedom to choose how we manage and record our media while preserving our environment.
