Demand Book Retailers Cease Use of Destructive Stickers on Book Covers
The Issue
As an avid collector with a library that houses over 600 novels, I have gained a deep understanding of the detrimental effects of stickers on book covers – a sentiment widely shared within our community. We cherish the effort and artistry that authors and designers put into creating original, captivating book covers and believe they should be appreciated in their intended form. Regrettably, it's too familiar for book-selling companies to mar these creations with stickers, diminishing their visual appeal and leading to long-term damage such as drying out, brittleness, and curling, which can irreparably compromise their aesthetic.
Moreover, we must also consider the environmental impact of the adhesive used in stickers. The staggering global production of approximately 12 billion square meters of self-adhesive labels yearly significantly contributes to our waste issues, with adverse environmental consequences ("The Sustainable Consortium"). As a community that values the integrity of our books and the environment, we stand in firm opposition to these physical disfigurements.
We firmly believe that book-selling companies can and should do better. We advocate for preserving book covers and the environment, and we urge all companies that sell books to discontinue the practice of affixing stickers on book covers. Your cooperation will ensure that books are appreciated in their best form and contribute to a less wasteful future. We invite you to join us in signing this petition to support the cessation of destructive sticker use on book covers.
There's no need to note your company's sale price on the book, who approves of it, or which book club it made it to that week. Please stop ruining our gorgeous covers with these stickers, and let us readers be heard and these artists be fully appreciated for their beautiful work.
