For years, our community has been subject to perceived wrongdoings and abuse by the Oak Ridge police department. This situation is both personal and of grave concern to us living under the constant suspicion and fear of those meant to protect us. There have been numerous instances hinting at injustice and misconduct but the lack of tangible evidence has hindered our pursuit for justice. With body cameras, not only the victims but officers too would have evidence to back up their stories, creating a fair ground for everyone. It's not an unheard solution, a 2017 report by the National Institute of Justice showed that police officers clad with body cameras received 93% fewer complaints of misconduct than those without the devices. These cameras grant transparency, accountability, fostering a much-needed trust between police and the public. With this, we beseech those in the position of power to compel the Oak Ridge police department to wear body cameras, an important step towards the public safety and justice that we rightfully deserve.
