As a concerned citizen of Noord-Holland, Netherlands, and a victim of the cruel and unjust confiscation of animals, I am raising this issue. On June 29, 2024, my two beloved dogs were confiscated . The pain and distress this caused led me to understand the harsh reality faced by thousands of seized animals annually in our region. Various accounts and reports provided a grim picture of the conditions in storage facilities, reporting inappropriate handling and even fostering cruelty towards the 'goods.'
We should not turn a blind eye towards this problem. Believe it or not, studies show that animals have emotions and can feel pain just like us humans (Smithsonian Magazine). They don't deserve such treatment.
We, therefore, call on the officials from Noord-Holland's local government to review the policies and practices around the confiscation of animals. We want transparency in the assessment of animals and assurance that they are not subjected to unfair tests or poor treatment. How we treat animals reflects on us as a society and we owe it to them to provide dedicated care and treatment, even in unfortunate situations such as confiscation.
