Demand Better Transit Now: Stand Up for South Vancouver!
The Issue
To Premier David Eby and the BC NDP government,
South Vancouver is evolving rapidly. New housing developments are reshaping our community, and with them, the need for improved public transit has never been more needed. Despite our rapidly growing community, our transit services lag far behind. This isn't just about convenience; it's about accessibility and environmental sustainability.
Current Challenges:
Inadequate Services: With 32% of South Vancouver residents, including in Marpole, relying on transit—among the highest in Vancouver—our services are overstretched.
Long Waits & Overcrowding: Residents face frustrating waits and cramped buses daily.
Limited Coverage: Rapid transit services on 41st and 49th Avenues are insufficient, and there is no bus service on 57th Avenue.
The Time for Action Is Now:
As the local MLA for Vancouver Langara, I have been advocating for better transit services and increased transit infrastructure investments to meet our community's needs. There is a concerning absence of service on 57th Avenue, where families, students, and seniors should have reliable transit options. The time has come to align our transit infrastructure with our community's growth.
We Demand:
Immediate Action: Expedited expansion of transit services, including introducing a bus service on 57th Avenue.
Enhanced Infrastructure: More buses, new and extended routes, and new Canada Line Stations at 33rd and 57th Avenues.
Investment Alignment: Capital investments that reflect the needs of South Vancouver’s rapid growth, with transit development matching the pace of new housing.
Evidence of Need:
The South Vancouver & Marpole Neighbourhood Equity Report by the Urban Studies Program and Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University in Partnership with South Vancouver Neighbourhood House and Marpole Neighbourhood House highlights stark disparities in transit access.
With the planned closure of the Community Health Centre at 49th Avenue and Knight, the lack of efficient transit could also impact healthcare accessibility.
Students, seniors and more residents in South Vancouver rely on transit than any other neighbourhood in the City.
We Are a Community in Transit:
With South Vancouver’s voices united, our community’s needs should no longer be overlooked. The ripple effects of inadequate transit reach far into our daily lives and future. South Vancouver calls for a transit system that reflects its vibrant spirit and meets its pressing needs.

Sincerely,
Michael Lee
