Demand Better Road Maintenance and Repair Funding in the UK

Demand Better Road Maintenance and Repair Funding in the UK
The Issue
As a concerned parent, I am deeply worried about the current state of our roads. Every day, I drive my young daughter to school and other activities, but the multitude of potholes on our routes is making these simple tasks increasingly risky. The condition of our roads is not just an inconvenience; it's a safety hazard for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike.
The existing "solutions" provided by local councils are inadequate. Outsourcing repairs to contractors who merely fill potholes with tarmac only offers temporary relief. Within weeks, these "fixed" potholes revert back to their dangerous states or even worsen.
According to data from RAC published only 5 days ago the RAC attended 7,904 breakdowns in the first quarter of 2024 due to bad road surfaces, up 53% on the last three months of 2023, a clear sign that the UK is suffering a pothole epidemic as roads continue to crumble.
Having just completed my petition, I have now just read an article posted on the Lancashire Post about a pedestrian who was injured due to a pothole in Preston to be told by the local council “potholes should be accepted as a fact of life” - my answer to this is NO, we shouldn’t have to accept this as a “fact of life” especially when it comes down to our own safety. - https://www.lep.co.uk/news/people/i-broke-my-ankle-tripping-on-a-pothole-and-the-council-told-me-thats-life-4606661
This petition calls on the government to increase funding for road maintenance and repair across the UK significantly. We need a comprehensive solution that ensures all repairs are carried out effectively and lastingly rather than quick fixes that don't stand up to regular use or adverse weather conditions.
We cannot afford any more delay – it's time we prioritise safe transportation infrastructure for all road users' benefit. Please sign this petition if you believe we deserve better roads in the UK.
