Hold the City of Austin & the Travis County DA Accountable for Failing Survivors

The Issue

SIGN THE PETITION:  DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY & TRANSPARENCY

Sexual assault cases are not being prosecuted in the progressive city of Austin. Virtually no rapists are going to jail.

  • 10,864 Sexual Assaults occurred in the Austin area
  • 1,161 Sexual Assaults Reported and Investigated by APD (10.7%)
  • 224 Referred for Prosecution (2.06%)
  • 77 Approved for Prosecution (0.7%)
  • 9 Plead Guilty or Charged with a Sex Crime (0.08%)

*Smith v. City of Austin, 2018

Travis County and the City of Austin have not held themselves accountable for perpetuating a rape culture of "disbelieving, demeaning, and ignoring" women of the community while also risking the safety of the community by allowing thousands of rapists to walk free.

It is time that we recognize the millions of dollars being spent on salaries, offices and horses and demand that these same people be held accountable for contaminating evidence, for manipulating data, for not believing or prosecuting cases especially in cases where the victim hasn't been severely injured, when the victim is intoxicated, when the victim is too traumatized to be involved, when the victim is a woman in uniform, when a case is deemed to be too difficult to try, and when the victim in a sexual assault case is simply a woman. We must demand that the Austin Police Department stop betraying us by clearing cases they haven’t solved, and demand that they apprehend rapists instead of posting photos of women in the community on a wall that they think are lying and using them as accreditation.

Demand that Austin start by believing survivors, taking accountability for the damages they have caused and do their part in ending systemic gender bias. The real trophy is in bringing trust and safety back to the Austin community. We cannot move forward until the admitted faults and retraumatization of women is acknowledged and settled.

Please stand with us and with all survivors who have been denied their civil right to justice, those whose voices have been continuously hushed by the justice system. Stand with us by adding your signature below.

We, the undersigned, stand with all women of our communities, and demand that the City of Austin and Travis County end the discrimination against women survivors of sexual assault.
