Demand better commuter parking options for students
The Issue
As a student residing just a mere five-minute drive from campus, it is incredibly frustrating to have to allocate 30 minutes prior to class simply to find parking. More often than not, I struggle to find a spot in the designated commuter lots because the majority of spaces are reserved for employees. This is not just inconvenient—it's unfair.
Campus parking is a widespread issue affecting countless students like me who rely on reliable transportation options to ensure prompt class attendance. Many of us share this frustration, spending an unreasonable amount of time circling lots instead of using it for academic pursuits. Our education should not be hampered by inadequate parking facilities.
Universities and colleges, including those here at our institution, frequently expand student enrollment numbers without doing due diligence in expanding infrastructure to match the growing demand. This oversight leads to logistical stress for students and compromises our academic experiences.
Moreover, this issue has implications beyond wasted time. Students who drive are burdened with potential tardiness, lowered attendance, and increased stress levels, all of which negatively impact academic performances and mental well-being. It is crucial that universities respect and acknowledge the needs of their commuting student population and work proactively to solve these issues.
A feasible solution could be the construction of a new parking deck or the acquisition and development of another parking lot dedicated solely to commuter students that is on campus. This would dramatically alleviate the daily frustrations many of us face and demonstrate that the university values equitable access to its facilities for all students. It is not an adequate solution to have students park off campus, for example, Irwin Street, and bus or walk to class which is a demanding amount of time before classes. Busses get full quickly, the route adds up to 20 minutes on a simple commute. Students who pay $60 for a parking permit should not have to allocate 30 minutes before classes just to attend their class on time.
By signing this petition, you are joining a cause to urge the university administration to take immediate and effective steps in addressing the commuter parking crisis. Through collective effort, we can push for tangible changes that facilitate a better environment conducive to academic success. Please sign and share this petition with fellow students and community members who support the fair allocation of resources and facilities for all students.
