We, the citizens of Indiana, are deeply disturbed by Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith's recent comments on the Three-Fifths Compromise, which he hailed as "a great move". This is not just insensitive, but an affront to all efforts to uphold human dignity and equality. The Three-Fifths Compromise marked a dark period in the history of the United States, counting each enslaved person as “3/5ths” of a person for representation and taxation purposes - a clear dehumanization of Black individuals. Beckwith's remarks, unfortunately, echo a racist ideology from that era that legitimized inhumane actions (Source: Henry Louis Gates Jr., The Root). We also have faith groups across the state are standing in solidarity with us, expressing their righteous indignation at these comments. We are therefore calling for a swift and unequivocal apology from Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith, coupled with an actionable plan to promote social justice and racial equality in our state.
