Demand Answers for Seven Beluga Deaths and a Sanctuary for Survivors
The Issue
According to World Animal News, seven animals that were moved out of Marineland Canada have died, and the belugas still alive should not be next. SeaWorld San Diego should make every necropsy finding public and work toward moving the survivors to a protected seaside sanctuary.
Cyprus was only 9 years old. He arrived at SeaWorld San Diego from the shuttered Marineland park in Niagara Falls, Ontario, less than two months before he died on October 18. SeaWorld says he stopped eating two days earlier and that an ultrasound found a serious problem in his intestines. Treatment could not save him.
He is not the only one. Six belugas and one dolphin have reportedly died after leaving Marineland. Every one of those deaths raises the same question: what went wrong, and could it happen again?
SeaWorld has said it will do a full necropsy, an animal autopsy, and share the results with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). That is a start. But handing results to one federal agency is not the same as telling the public. People who care about these whales deserve to know how each animal died, so those lessons can protect the belugas that are still alive.
Belugas are smart, social animals. They call to each other constantly and live in close family groups across cold northern oceans. A concrete tank cannot offer that. A seaside sanctuary, with natural seawater and room to swim, would give the survivors a better chance at a healthy life.
Justice for the belugas that died starts with the truth and a safer home for the rest.
Sign the petition to demand answers for these deaths and a sanctuary for the survivors before another beluga is lost.
