UPDATE: The Anoka-Hennepin school district has responded to emails regarding their work to address LGBT suicide and anti-gay bullying in the district. If you click here, you can see a list of the work that the District has done and is doing to fight this epidemic.

In the past year, three gay students have committed suicide in the Anoka-Hennepin School District. This comes on top of an investigation last year that found two teachers in the district were harassing a gay student.

Tammy Aaberg, a mother of a student named Justin who committed suicide on July 9, 2010, attended the most recent school board meeting, and asked the school board members a question:

"For those of you who have never had a gay child, you need to know it is one of the scariest things to learn because you know that they will need to deal with a lot of criticism and harassment in their lives, and it makes me worry," Aaberg said. "Do you think my son Justin deserved to die because there are other kids who feel superior by picking on him and no staff member will stop them?"

Students in the Anoka-Hennepin school district deserve to be safe. They deserve a school board that will prioritize safe spaces for all students, and make sure that classrooms are a place where students can learn..

In the past year alone, three gay students have taken their lives in your school district, because of the threat of persecution and bullying they faced just by going to school. This sad fact comes on top of an investigation last year by the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, which found that two teachers in your district were guilty of harassing a gay student.

Tammy Aaberg, the mother of a student, Justin, who committed suicide earlier this summer, put a very somber punctuation mark on this glaring problem, by addressing leaders in your school system.

"For those of you who have never had a gay child, you need to know it is one of the scariest things to learn because you know that they will need to deal with a lot of criticism and harassment in their lives, and it makes me worry,” Aaberg said. “Do you think my son Justin deserved to die because there are other kids who feel superior by picking on him and no staff member will stop them?”

How do you answer that question, and what steps are you going to take to make sure that schools within your district are safe for all students?

Thank you for your time.
