The issue

The Better Bloke Project Limited claims, according to its constitution, to promote the prevention or control of harmful or abusive behaviour, including emotional abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, and suicide.

However, the organization often contradicts its own aims. The Better Bloke Project, along with its affiliated platforms—Bloke’s Advice Facebook group (BA) and the Better Bloke Project Podcast—has been reported to promote misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, and harmful stereotypes toward marginalised communities and groups. Despite claiming to support addiction recovery, they actively encourage alcohol use through promotional merchandise and discussions, further undermining their stated mission.

Concerns have also been raised about deceptive conduct and non-compliance with constitutional obligations. Alarmingly, the charity lacks appropriate escalation processes or emergency strategies to handle individuals in crisis, despite promoting its platforms as safe spaces for mental health support.

This failure became tragically evident when a man in crisis reached out to the Bloke’s Advice Facebook group for mental health support. Instead of receiving proper assistance, he was met with dismissive and unhelpful advice without trauma informed care. Just three days later, he took his own life. This is not an isolated incident, as the charity has acknowledged receiving multiple posts of a similar nature each week. It is deeply concerning that there is no escalation process or intervention strategy in place to address such situations. This incident highlights a grave systemic failure within the Better Bloke Project.

Further scrutiny is necessary regarding their financial practices. A call for a thorough investigation into both the charity's business operations and financial reports is thus proposed.

A charity must be held to a high standard of conduct, service, and transparency. Therefore, we call for a full, impartial investigation into the practices of the Better Bloke Project Limited. We urge the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) to undertake a comprehensive investigation into the Better Bloke Project’s operations, conduct, and financial practices to prevent further harm and ensure that vulnerable individuals seeking help are met with genuine support and care.
