The Issue

For over twenty years, a culture of professional negligence, arbitrary grading, and blatant favoritism has been allowed to compromise the educational standards of our district under the tenure of Laura Stephens.

Alumni from as far back as 2005, alongside current families, are coming forward with the exact same story: an instructor who routinely refuses to teach, replaces state-mandated curriculum with movies and card games, and remains entirely disengaged at her desk.

Worse than the complete lack of instruction is the active harm being done to students. Academics and life-changing opportunities are being weaponized. Grades are handed out based on personal bias rather than objective rubrics. Highly qualified, hardworking students are systematically barred from participating in school theatrical productions and skipped over for crucial drama scholarships out of sheer personal spite, while institutional funds are funneled exclusively to a rotating circle of favorites.

Furthermore, this ongoing neglect of duty has expanded from elective arts into core academic coursework, including English classes. Because English is a state-mandated subject tied directly to graduation requirements and core literacy benchmarks, this continued non-instruction actively tanks student academic readiness and places an unfair burden on families.

When community members recently tried to voice these concerns publicly, the discussion was immediately suppressed and deleted. We are taking the conversation to a place where it cannot be silenced. This is no longer just a complaint about a bad teacher; this is a decades-long failure of administrative oversight and a misuse of public taxpayer funds to protect an ineffective employee through institutional inertia and nepotism.

We, the undersigned alumni, parents, taxpayers, and current students, demand:

  • An Immediate Administrative Audit: A thorough, transparent review of classroom practices, lesson plan compliance, and grading history for both English and Drama courses under Laura Stephens.
  • Scholarship Accountability: A formal, retroactive investigation into the selection processes, criteria, and distribution logs for all drama scholarships under her purview.
  • Formal Disciplinary Action: The initiation of formal administrative proceedings up to and including the termination of employment for documented cause, ethical violations, and persistent neglect of duty.

It is time to restore integrity to both our core academic and arts departments and to protect the future of our students. Sign to demand accountability now.
