I, a resident of Smith County, was subject to an unexpected and brutal assault from a local sheriff, involving a forced entry into my home, violation of my basic rights, a painful and disorienting attack resulting in a broken ankle. Instead of justice, what followed was a nightmare as I was prosecuted on grounds of resisting transport or search, a charge that should never have been levied against me, as my rights had been tragically violated by the very forces meant to uphold them.

This horrifying incident is not the only example of corruption brewing within Smith County. The corrupted forces extend their influence to local sheriffs, district attorneys, and even encroach onto the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Each entity empowered to protect us is instead embroiled in these practices that shake faith in the system they are sworn to uphold.

A report by the Heritage Foundation indicates that corruption among officials is a pervasive issue that not only corrodes the public trust but can also lead to violation of citizens' rights (The Heritage Foundation, 2019). This malfeasance must no longer be ignored.

This petition, therefore, calls for an impartial, external investigation into the actions of the Smith County officials involved. Justice must be upheld for the survivors of this corruption, and deterrents must be put in place to avoid such power abuse in the future.
