Over 215,000 babies were forcibly adopted in the decades that followed WW2.

This horrendous practice continued into the 1980s. Young, unmarried mothers were denied information about help available through the welfare state. They were given no choice. Fathers were denied the right to be involved in their child’s future. Those arranging these forced adoptions ignored the traumatic impact of early separation on mother and child. 

Once a baby was taken there was no follow-up. Teenage mothers were sent home, unaware of the lifelong impact that such a traumatic loss would have on their mental and physical health. 

No-one considered what it must have been like for a helpless infant to be handed to strangers.  Denied their mother, their heritage, their history, and their identity, adoptees began their new lives disenfranchised and traumatised.

Some adoptions were successful, others were not. 
Adult adoptees have shared deeply disturbing accounts of childhood challenges. 
No-one knew because no-one checked on their wellbeing.

Some women were able to have more children. Many did not. 
Women who lost a child through forced adoption often suffered secondary infertility.
