The Issue

I am writing this petition out of deep personal concern and outrage. After witnessing a horrifying video of a dog being attacked by an individual named Larkin Garrett, I was shocked to learn that Garrett was only charged with a misdemeanor, despite the severity of his actions. This is not an isolated incident. Time and again, intentional animal abusers in Alabama are getting away with minimal bonds and misdemeanor charges when our state law clearly stipulates these acts should be treated as felonies.

Alabama Code mandates felony charges for intentional animal abuse, yet our District Attorneys are failing to uphold this law consistently. The police and animal control officers are doing their part by arresting these offenders, but it's disheartening to see them released on minimal bonds due to the leniency of our DAs.

This is not just about one case or one dog; it's about justice for all animals who suffer at the hands of abusers. It's about ensuring that those who commit such heinous acts face appropriate legal consequences.

According to data from the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), states with stronger animal protection laws have lower rates of human violence as well - demonstrating that enforcing these laws benefits society as a whole.

It's high time we demand better from our legal system! We must insist that Alabama District Attorneys follow state law and charge intentional animal abusers with felonies as required by Alabama Code. Our laws are NOT mere suggestions; they exist for a reason!

Please join me in demanding justice for abused animals in Alabama! Sign this petition today – let’s make sure our voices are heard loud and clear: Enforce the laws! They ARE NOT SUGGESTIONS!
