Demand Adequate eating times at Manheim Central Middle School

The Issue

On January 13th, 2025, we received our school lunch at 12:33pm and were abruptly instructed to leave the cafeteria at 12:44pm. This rush was caused by a staggered classroom release system, which varies between classes, and a slow dismissal process managed by our vice principal and other teachers. This is a clear violation of our rights as students which requires a minimum of 20 minutes to eat, as defined by guidelines from health and education organizations.

According to the Center for Disease Control, not giving students sufficient time to eat can result in poor nutrition, which negatively impacts academic performance. Furthermore, rushed eating can lead to various digestive health issues. It's not just about the food we consume, but also the environment in which we eat. A hurried lunch period can increase stress levels in students, further impacting their well-being and academic success.

We call upon Manheim Central Middle School to revise their current lunch policies. A minimum guaranteed of at least 20 minutes to eat our food, not including the time we sit to wait and get dismissed to go buy food. We deserve the right to have our designated time to eat, to enjoy our food, and to socialize with our friends without being hurried. By making this change, Manheim Central Middle School will not only comply with accepted standards but also contribute positively to the student’s overall academic performance and health. Let us lunch our way to a brighter educational journey. Sign this petition to support our cause.
