The Issue

On May 1, 2024, my world shattered when my sister, Wendy, vanished without a trace. She was last seen walking down a street in Sudbury, Ontario. That stark, haunting image of my sister being approached by someone with cruel intentions—being taken, perhaps without anyone around to help—redefined my perception of safety.

However, Wendy's story is not an isolated case; it is tragically emblematic of a broader crisis spiraling across our nation. Women and girls are disappearing from streets, parking lots, apartment buildings, transit stops, workplaces, and even while walking home. They are just going about their everyday lives, only to encounter fear and danger that should be unthinkable in 2024 in a country like Canada.

This epidemic of violence and abductions is not solely a criminal issue; it is a dire societal failure. Every case represents not merely statistics but shattered families, each with missing daughters, sisters, mothers, and friends. According to the Native Women's Association of Canada, Indigenous women face violence at 3 times the rate of non-Indigenous women, a statistic that lays bare the systemic neglect and imbalance in protection and support.

We need actionable solutions and dedicated resources to reverse this harrowing trend.

1. Comprehensive Safety Education: Implement mandatory personal safety curricula in schools to educate young women and girls about awareness, self-defense tactics, and emergency responses.

2. Increased Public Surveillance: Fund more CCTV cameras in key urban and rural areas, with increased police presence and response capabilities, to deter potential attacks before they occur.

3. Specialized Search and Rescue Teams: Allocate more funding to develop specialized teams for the rapid response to and investigation of missing persons cases, especially focusing on marginalized communities.

4. Strengthened Legislation and Sentencing: Introduce strong legislation to heighten penalties for perpetrators of gender-based violence, creating a strong deterrent.

These steps are not just vital, they are urgent.

We cannot stand by knowing that the streets our sisters, daughters, and friends walk day-to-day may become pathways to peril. Join me in advocating for the government to prioritize women's safety on every level. Sign this petition to demand that our leaders take immediate and decisive action to protect women and girls across Canada. Your voice can be a step towards a safer, more just society. Together, let’s make Canada a place where everyone can live without fear.
