Demand Accountability, Transparency, and Community Safety on FetLife
Demand Accountability, Transparency, and Community Safety on FetLife
The Issue
FetLife has long presented itself as a community built on consent, education, personal responsibility, and ethical interaction. Many members join the platform seeking a safe environment to connect, learn, and participate in kink communities.
However, growing concerns within the community suggest that FetLife faces ongoing challenges in two critical areas: the presence of groups that promote predatory targeting and racial fetishization, and a lack of transparency surrounding moderation and account enforcement decisions.
OUR DEMANDS
1. Remove Predatory and Racially Fetishistic Communities We call on FetLife to review and remove groups whose primary purpose is the fetishization of race or the targeting of vulnerable users based on age, inexperience, or perceived susceptibility. Examples include communities that promote racial stereotypes as sexual identities or groups that market themselves around terms such as “young,” “eager,” or “easy,” which can encourage predatory dynamics. Consent requires informed, freely given choice.
Communities that normalize predatory targeting or reduce people to racial stereotypes undermine the principles of respect, consent, and equality that FetLife claims to support.
2. Establish Transparent Moderation Oversight and Accountability We call on FetLife to implement a formal moderation review and accountability process that includes: 1. Clear explanations identifying the specific rule or policy violated when enforcement actions occur
• A meaningful appeals process for restricted, suspended, or banned accounts
• Independent review of disputed moderation decisions
• Public transparency regarding moderation standards and enforcement practices
• Meaningful responses to user concerns regarding moderation, safety, and community standards Users should not lose access to their accounts without a clear understanding of what rule was violated. Participation in lawful off-platform discussion, criticism, advocacy, or petitions should not result in account restrictions unless a specific and published policy has been violated.
We further call on FetLife to address community concerns directly rather than allowing reports, complaints, and feedback to go unanswered. Many users have expressed frustration that concerns regarding predatory behavior, racial fetishization, moderation practices, and community safety appear to receive little transparency or meaningful engagement.
A healthy community requires more than rules and enforcement. It requires leadership that is willing to listen to criticism, engage with community concerns in good faith, and explain decisions that affect users and the community as a whole.
A HISTORY OF SIMILAR CONCERNS
The concerns raised in this petition do not exist in isolation. Over the years, multiple independent writers and community members have publicly documented concerns regarding FetLife’s moderation practices, transparency, and response to criticism.
In 2008, an article published by House of Void described a situation in which FetLife founder John Baku reportedly apologized following a series of account bans and invited affected users back to the platform.
More recently, a series of open letters and commentary published by Great White Snark raised concerns regarding censorship, moderation transparency, treatment of marginalized community members, and the handling of user criticism.
While these sources reflect opinion and experience, they demonstrate that concerns about governance, accountability, and community trust have been raised repeatedly over many years. Recent account restrictions involving users participating in lawful off-platform advocacy efforts have further reinforced concerns about transparency, consistency, and fair application of community standards. When users lose access to messaging, groups, and community participation without a clear explanation of what policy was violated, it erodes trust and creates uncertainty.
CONCLUSION
This petition is not an attack on FetLife. It is a call for accountability, transparency, and community safety. We urge FetLife to address these concerns, strengthen trust within the community, and uphold the values of consent, fairness, and ethical responsibility that many members joined the platform to support.
By signing this petition, supporters are asking FetLife to:
* Remove groups that promote racial fetishization and predatory targeting
* Implement transparent moderation oversight with meaningful appeals and accountability * Address community concerns openly rather than ignoring or dismissing them
* Restore trust through consistent and clearly communicated enforcement practices.
A community built on consent should also be built on accountability, transparency, and respect for its members.
