The Issue

Jalen Hurts is more than a quarterback to Philadelphia Eagles fans. He is a leader, a Super Bowl champion, and one of the most important players in the franchise’s future. That is why the circumstances surrounding his participation in the October 11, 2026, game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London deserve serious scrutiny.

No regular-season game (or any game really) should ever take priority over a player’s long-term health.

According to Reuters’ reporting on October 19, 2026, Hurts was initially diagnosed with a superficial blood clot in his left calf before the London game. Further medical evaluation subsequently revealed deep vein thrombosis and blood clots in both lungs. He is now expected to miss the remainder of the season. The Eagles organization hid this from the public.

These developments raise legitimate questions about the medical assessments, communication, and decision-making that preceded his participation in London.

Reports have also raised concerns that Hurts went an extended period without sleep during the trip and preparations for the game. If the reported 36-hour period without sleep is accurate, the circumstances surrounding his rest, medical supervision, and readiness to play deserve careful examination.

Sleep is not a luxury for professional athletes. It is an essential component of recovery, concentration, reaction time, and sound decision-making. A peer-reviewed review published in the journal Sports Medicine and available through the National Institutes of Health explains that sleep deprivation can negatively affect athletic performance, including reaction time, accuracy, endurance, and cognitive function.

When these concerns intersect with a serious medical diagnosis, the need for transparency becomes even more important. Fans should not have to speculate about whether appropriate precautions were taken or whether every relevant medical consideration was adequately addressed before a player entered the field.

This petition is not about assigning blame before the facts are established. It is about demanding answers, protecting athletes, and ensuring that decisions involving player health receive the scrutiny they deserve.

We call on the NFL and the Philadelphia Eagles to:

1. Conduct an independent review of the medical assessments, clearance process, and decision-making surrounding Jalen Hurts’ participation in the London game.

2. Clarify the relevant timeline of his diagnosis, treatment, medical clearance, and any reported sleep deprivation, to the extent permitted by medical privacy requirements.

3. Examine international travel protocols, including sleep management, medical monitoring, and procedures for evaluating players who develop potentially serious medical conditions before games.

4. Establish stronger safeguards to ensure that medical personnel can prioritize player health without pressure from competitive considerations.

5. Communicate the findings and any resulting policy changes to players and the public, while protecting confidential medical information.

Jalen Hurts deserves the opportunity to recover fully and continue his career without unnecessary risks. Every NFL player deserves the same protection, regardless of their importance to a team or the stakes of a game.

The NFL and the Eagles have a responsibility to take player safety seriously. That responsibility should be demonstrated through transparent procedures, independent oversight, and meaningful action when questions arise.
