Demand accountability in the Xavier Nungaray tragedy
The Issue
Our hearts ache as we share the tragic story of Xavier Nungaray, a promising young soul from Highland Park whose life was senselessly cut short. Xavier was repeatedly bullied and physically assaulted by a classmate, left feeling isolated and desperate. This tragic ordeal ultimately drove him to make the irreversible decision to jump off a fourth floor balcony to his death.
Yet, Xavier’s story is not just a story of bullying; it is a story of collective failure. The school, entrusted with the responsibility to safeguard its students, was notified of the maltreatment. Despite reports, there were no adequate interventions or support mechanisms in place to protect him.
This petition calls for immediate accountability from those involved. The student responsible for bullying and fighting with Xavier must face appropriate consequences, as must the guardians who allowed such behavior to persist. Moreover, the school’s administration needs to be thoroughly investigated for their negligence and complete disregard for Xavier’s safety.
In the United States, nearly one in five students reports being bullied, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, and these occurrences can significantly impact a student's mental health and wellbeing. In a country where over 3.2 million students fall victim to bullying each year, we cannot remain silent any longer.
Holding the aggressor accountable and investigating the parents and school administration are necessary steps. We urge Highland Park authorities to implement more robust anti-bullying policies to ensure that no other child becomes a victim, and no family endures the pain that Xavier’s family is experiencing.
Please sign this petition to demand justice for Xavier Nungaray and to hold those responsible accountable for their actions and inactions. Together, we can make a change.
