Demand Accountability in Illinois Veterinary Care

Demand Accountability in Illinois Veterinary Care
The Issue
Sassy, was more than a pet—she was my beloved companion for 15 years. In May 2025, she passed away after what I believe was preventable suffering caused by repeated veterinary misjudgments, ignored concerns, and a failure to follow guidance from specialists. Despite my efforts to advocate for her, Sassy’s condition declined under continued treatment that likely worsened her heart and kidney function, leading to hypovolemia.
This heartbreaking experience has opened my eyes to the glaring gaps in veterinary accountability in Illinois. The loss of Sassy is not just my loss; it's a wake-up call for many pet owners in the state who trust the expertise of licensed veterinarians for the well-being of their cherished family members. Yet, the current system does not provide adequate protection or recourse for families when their trust is violated.
I am asking the Illinois General Assembly to take concrete steps to ensure better accountability and standards in veterinary care:
Require all licensed veterinarians in Illinois to hold professional malpractice insurance. This would ensure that there are financial consequences for negligent practices and provide a form of restitution to affected families.
Mandate that disciplinary records of veterinarians be made public and easily accessible. This transparency will empower pet owners to make informed decisions about their pets’ healthcare providers.
Establish an Independent Veterinary Malpractice Review Board to objectively investigate claims of malpractice and conclude with binding recommendations.
Amend civil legislation to recognize emotional and companionship losses of pets. Pets are family, and their untimely loss due to malpractice should be compensated appropriately.
These measures will not only protect our furry friends but also restore trust in the veterinary profession. Stand with me to demand change and ensure that what happened to Sassy doesn’t happen to another cherished companion.
