The CFIA has a long history of callous behaviour and lawlessness. Animal advocates became acutely aware of this when the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition (CHDC) took the agency to court for breach of regulations over the way horses are transported by air to Japan for slaughter. It should have been simple: laws were being broken, so we expected the agency to face repercussions and clean up their act. Not so. The CFIA continues to flaunt its power, flying above the law, doing as it pleases. Why? Because it can. Until recently, there has been no organized movement to take it down. 
The agency - now accused by some as being a Canadian "criminal/terrorist organization" - wants to exterminate a farm of healthy ostriches. They have refused to run tests on the birds and have threatened the farm owners with fines should they proceed to seek testing on their own. They aren't permitting the farm owners to give care to their own animals. Recently, an ostrich hen died on their watch. The CFIA claims that she had a pre-existing injury and condition, causing death. According to witnesses, the hen's prior tendon injury had been worsened by panicked efforts to escape a low-flying RCMP drone. Witnesses further claim that the CFIA did not properly care for her nor did they feed her the required amounts of electrolytes.

Years have passed, but today's story is much the same. The CFIA bullies its way through issues that could be solved peacefully, leaving a trail of broken laws, dead animals and anguish in its wake.
Must we put up with more draconian behaviour from this out-of-control agency?
