Demand Accountability from Skilled Trades Ontario

Demand Accountability from Skilled Trades Ontario
The Issue
🛠️ Ontario Apprentices Deserve Better — Let's hold Skilled Trades Ontario Accountable for their programs
Imagine working for almost 5 years, and then finally being ready to take a critical step in your career - only to be blocked by bureaucracy and system failures. This is exactly what is happening to my son, a dedicated apprentice plumber — and to many others like him across Ontario.
Like others, he took an unpaid day off work, paid for travel, parking, and meals out of pocket, and prepared for months to write his Certificate of Qualification exam. But due to technical failures in the new digital testing system introduced by Skilled Trades Ontario (STO), he — along with every apprentice at his testing location — was unable to complete the exam and was automatically given a failing grade. Some apprentices had travelled hours for their opportunity.
Investigations on social media quickly confirmed this was not an isolated incident. Server issues affected multiple testing centers across the province. To date, Skilled Trades Ontario has offered no real accountability or meaningful explanation. Access to resources within the agency is near impossible, requiring hours of hold time to talk to an agent.
❌ This Is More Than an Inconvenience — It’s Career Sabotage
Apprentices are being denied the opportunity to become Journeypeople.
They’re blocked from higher wages and delayed in their career advancement.
Most are forced to wait 30 days to re-attempt the exam — only to face the same broken system.
🔧 This System Is Broken
The new digital exam system was supposed to modernize the process. Instead, it’s become a barrier to entry. Apprentices are left in limbo, demoralized, and financially strained.
📣 We Demand Action from Skilled Trades Ontario:
A reliable, functional digital testing process.
Compensation for apprentices who lost wages, travel expenses, who failed due to technical issues.
A public explanation and plan for improvement.
No more delays. No more failures caused by the system, not the candidate. And certainly the province should stop bragging about their support of Skilled Trades in our media.
Ontario's future tradespeople deserve better. Sign this petition to demand real accountability and reform from Skilled Trades Ontario. Let’s stand up for our apprentices and make sure they get the fair treatment and opportunity they’ve worked so hard to earn.
