Over the weekend my friend came across a heart-wrenching scene in Rutherford County: A momma cat trying to cross a busy road to make it back to her newborn kittens. My friend pulled over to make sure the cat didn’t get hit, but despite her best efforts she was unable to get mom.  Having to get to work, she called PAWS and requested help. PAWS decision to set a humane trap, which they chained to a drainage ditch (with heavy rain and thunderstorms in the forecast) and did not monitor, ultimately led to her unfortunate death. My friend went back and managed to rescue the litter of kittens, sparing them an untimely fate, but their best efforts couldn't save the mom.

This disturbing incident has left our community appalled and demands our undivided attention. It raises serious questions about the practices and accountability of Rutherford County Paws, the organization entrusted with the welfare of our local animal population. Such neglect and disregard for animal welfare are unacceptable and must be addressed promptly and transparently.

The residents of Rutherford County deserve comprehensive answers on how this horrifying incident was allowed to occur and what steps are being taken to prevent such tragedies in the future. We urge Rutherford County Paws to conduct a thorough investigation and share their findings with the public. Moreover, the organization must establish a robust action plan to ensure greater accountability and better practices.

It is essential that Paws is staffed by responsible and compassionate individuals who prioritize the protection and well-being of innocent animals. Such roles should be filled by those genuinely committed to advocating for animal rights and safe conditions.
