The Issue

I live in the beautiful town of Leavenworth, WA. Every day when I walk out onto my patio, or pull out of my driveway, I am struck by the natural beauty of our area. However, I want to bring attention to a mammoth 70-foot Christian Cross currently being built on Tumwater Mountain above town that will significantly detract from that natural beauty. Not only is this cross enormous, but it will also be lit at night, casting its beaming presence for miles around. I, like many other locals, were neither informed nor consulted about this intrusive structure. Even more concerning, it seems the cross is being built without the necessary permits. This means no due process, no public consultation, no assessment of the environmental or aesthetic impact it will have on our beloved town.

The intrusion strikes at the heart of our community, arbitrarily imposing a symbol that does not necessarily reflect the diverse beliefs and values of Leavenworth residents. It is not the existence of the symbol itself that is contentious, but its imposing presence and lack of permitting transparency. Given that our own Leavenworth Municipal Code (Chapter 18.22) mandates permitting for structures of certain dimensions, this cross's construction is not only objectionable, it appears to be unlawful.

Our town deserves respect, open communication, and adherence to proper lawful procedures. That’s why we are calling upon the city and county officials, responsible parties, and regulatory bodies to account for this seemingly unpermitted cross. Please support us in demanding this accountability.

Our community deserves to have our rights, and our landscape respected. Sign this petition to demand accountability for the unpermitted cross on Tumwater Mountain. For those who wish to make their feelings known to Chelan County, please feel free to submit a code violation form. It is located on the Community Development page County of Chelan, Washington.
