We started this petition to raise awareness about Abdurahman “Abdu” Ahmed Akl, warning that his early release and lack of adequate supervision posed a serious risk to our community. Many dismissed our concerns.
Now, the inevitable has happened.
On September 15, 2025, Akl led police on a high-speed chase exceeding 140 mph through multiple municipalities in Genesee County. According to the Tri-County Times, he weaved through neighborhoods, sped down both sides of U.S. 23, and even entered a Costco parking lot before fleeing onto I-75 - all while endangering countless lives.
He has now been charged with fleeing and eluding police in the third degree, a felony. This is his second arrest this year - and just months after being released from prison for the 2017 shooting death of Brady Alan Morris.
In February 2025, Akl was also arrested for domestic violence after allegedly strangling his sister. That case was reduced to a misdemeanor when the victim refused to testify, and he served only 72 days in jail.
We demand accountability:
We call on Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton, Judge Jennifer Manley, and the Michigan Department of Corrections to:
Revoke Abdurahman Akl’s parole immediately pending full review of his compliance and behavior since release.
Pursue the maximum penalty for the felony charge of fleeing and eluding.
Investigate parole board procedures that allowed an individual with a violent history to be released early without proper oversight.
Implement community safety reforms to prevent high-risk offenders from returning to neighborhoods unmonitored.
Our community should never have to say “we told you so.”
This is about accountability - and about preventing the next tragedy before it happens.
Together, let’s show that our community is watching, and we won’t stay silent while reckless decisions endanger lives.
